"There can be no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected every life, business and institution in the country. Deaths, illness, job losses, bankruptcies - all have conspired to. change our lives permanently. Make no mistake. The Academy Theatre will close without alternative funding sources. As a charitable foundation we rely on self-generated revenue to maintain operations.

We closed on March 13, and live performance venues will be among the last to re-open. In the midst of this pandemic one could wonder why venues like the Academy Theatre matter in the broader context. Are there not higher priorities? What about health, the economy? A better lens through which to view performing arts is that it is one of many priorities. It is certainly not more important than people’s health. But this is not a zero sum game. There do not have to be winners and losers.

Thanks to funding from the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation, the Academy Theatre has a good chance to rebound from this pandemic related closure. We plan to re-open and continue to provide the community with access to the best professional and community-based programming available, while we contribute to the local economy through partnerships with local businesses and encourage increased collaterals pending throughout Lindsay."
